Astronomy and Contemporary Music
Synopsis: The tremendous progress in
astronomy during the 20th and early 21st centuries has proven to be a source of great inspiration
for contemporary art music composers. Many 20th- and 21st-century works exhibit some sort of connection to
phenomena in astronomy, physics, and mathematics. This presentation explored some such works, with a
particular emphasis on Whitehouse’s newly-composed pieces. The presentation featured a substantial
visual component, including images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
