Hans Clahsen's Alkira Observatory - Sierra Vista, Arizona
Hans completed the observatory in December 2005. It is named Alkira, the Australian Aborigine word for 'sky'. Hans built this roll-off roof observatory without outside assistance and he is looking forward to warm weather and clear skies!
The size is 10' X 10' and a little over 4' high when the roof is off. The roof rolls on 6 (3 each side) 3" rollers (300 lbs. ea.). Construction is all 2x4, corrugated roof panels and oriented strand board (OSB) sides with primer and three coats of paint. The floor is concrete slab. Roll-off section 4x4's are set in concrete and the roller surface is reinforced with 3X3 steel angle iron. 2x4 cross-bracing and 2x4 corner-bracing were used.
The telescopes inside the observatory will be a 10" Orion Dob and a new 5" Meade 2130AT reflector on a tripod. Binoculars will also be used.
